Covering an area of about 1600 square kilometers, Bangkok is regarded as the gateway to the country, and is made up of about 50 Khets or districts. Founded as the capital of the country in 1782, Bangkok has now become a modern destination with towering skyline and well maintained establishments, al though retaining its ancient glories. No wonder why many tourist organizations as well as magazines have rated Bangkok among the top tourist destinations in the world.

Bangkok boasts of such a great number of attractions that it is quite difficult to list them all. Of which, perhaps the most noteworthy are exquisite palaces and ancient shrines in the region such as Grand Palace, which would be the first attraction that comes into the mind when one think about the city.

Suan Pakkad Palace, which served as the residence of Princess Chumphot; Wat Trai Mit, whose centerpiece is a golden image of Lord Buddha; Wat Mahathat, which is home to Mahachulalongkorn Buddhist University; Wat Pho, the oldest as well as largest of its kind in the city, which is much famed for its mural paintings and inscriptions; Wat Arun, with a 79-metre-high pagoda; and Wat Ratchabophit, whose architecture is a blend of traditional and western styles.

A visit to Bangkok would not to be complete without taking a tour to some of the fascinating museums in the city such as National Museum, with a vast selection of items collected from Neolithic and Ayutthaya periods; National Gallery Museum, exhibiting both traditional and contemporary works created by Thai artists; Museum of Imagery Technology, the first camera and photograph museum in Asia.

Science Museum, with an interesting aquarium, a planetarium, and several other sections for entertainment and education; Philatelic Museum, which is a must-see for stamp collectors; and Royal Barge National Museum, which has on display an array of royal barges that were used during royal occasions.

Interesting attractions in Bangkok also include Dusit Zoo, boasting of more than 200 mammals, 150 reptiles, and 1000 birds; Pasteur Institute or Snake Farm, with an amazing collection of poisonous snakes; Thai Cat Palace, featuring several breeds of cats such as Siamese, white pure Maeo Khao Mani, and diamond-eyed cats. Thus goes on the attractions in the city.

Bangkok has something for everyone. For instance, if you are a shopping enthusiast, some excellent options are available in destinations like Chinatown, a business center packed with a plethora of shopping malls, Chatuchak Weekend Market, a huge open ground where everything from food and clothing items to handicraft items and pets can be shopped, and Pak Khlong Talat – the largest wholesale market in the country to shop all types of vegetables and cut flowers.

Likewise, while your stay in the city, take a cruise along the much celebrated Chao Phraya River to experience the majestic beauty of the destination. For fun and recreation, some better options are available in the form of Magic Land, Siam Water Park, and Dream World. Apart from these, there are a myriad of centers in the city presenting Thai cultural shows such as National Theatre, Thailand Cultural Centre, and Chalerm Krung Royal Theatre.

In short, Bangkok has everything to make your vacation truly unforgettable as well as enjoyable. A host of accommodation options, especially luxurious, are there for visitors who want to spend their vacation in Bangkok in style and elegance. Many of the five-star accommodation choices are based in the central Silom district of the city. Some of these hotels are attached with more than 700 rooms and provide options to choose from suites, standard rooms, deluxe rooms, and apartments that are suitable for long stays.

Further, many of the upscale hotels in the city are excellent dining facilities. Even some render superb choices for fitness and rejuvenation in the form of fitness centers and spa facilities. Apart from these, some luxury hotels in the region offer packages for such events as wedding parties.

Mostly, these hotels are in close proximity to some of the top attractions in the city. An added advantage is that many of them are within easy reach of almost all major transport system such as the Suvarnabhumi International Airport and the Saphan Taksin station of the Skytrain, which is the elevated metro system of the city.

Since many of the hotels have their own websites with rates and pictures of rooms, this allows you choose an accommodation of your choice and book it in advance via online. All you have to do is to let them know your preferences and rest they will take care!

You will have no problem finding hotels in Bangkok; the city will have something to suit your needs, whether you’re looking for a budget type hostel or a first class hotel. On your arrival in Bangkok you will be overwhelmed by the sky high buildings, busy highways and amount of traffic flowing through the urban sprawl that is Bangkok; however stay long enough and you will find hidden treasures in its web of streets. Amongst the chaos you will find ancient rituals, Thai temples, stunning palaces and traditional wooden houses, and then you will be pleased you took the time to get to know this wonderful and fascinating city a little better.

Once of the most striking attractions in the city and top of any tourists list is The Grand Palace, built in 1782 and once the abode of the Thai king. Within the complex are many glorious and striking palaces, Wats and monuments. To really appreciate it go early to miss the crowds and the intense heat of the mid-day sun. Wat Phra Kaew is also known as The Temple of the Emerald Buddha. Inside this temple you will find a hundred year old statue. The statue has been sculpted from a gigantic piece of jade. Wat Arun, is also called The Temple of Dawn and its elongated Khmer-style tower is decorated in minute pieces of porcelain. Known to be the oldest temple in the city is Wat Pho. This temple was constructed by King Rama I and is commonly called the Temple of the Reclining Buddha. The actual Buddha is a lengthy 46 meters long and 15 meters high, has mother of pearl inlaid feet and is gold plated.

Another attraction not to be missed if you do find yourself in Bangkok is Jim Thompson’s House. He was an American man who decided to open up a museum in order to revive Thailand\’s silk industry; in the museum you can find an interesting and stunning collection of Thai and Asian art, antiques and pottery.

Don’t miss out a voyage along the Chao Phraya River in a long-tail boat or aboard the local express ferry that goes up and down the river many times every day. Make stops at various famous landmarks and then embark again at the next stop. This is a relaxing and gentle way to avoid the traffic, the heat and in the same time see a different side of the city.

Bangkok is a great city for shopping so make sure you bring your credit card with you. There are street markets all over the city along with air conditioned department stores and local designer boutiques. Chatuchak Weekend Market has thousands of stalls to explore and you most likely be able to find whatever you are looking for here, craft items, pets, artwork, antiques, stylish clothes and tasty local delights. China Town is a hive of activity that is just like a maze, here you’ll find gold shops, fabric shops, traditional Chinese medicines and street after street of market stalls. Night-time shopping at Patpong market will provide you with all your presents to take home, souvenirs, fake brands, watches and clothes.

If you are planning on traveling for a period of time then Thailand is not the only Asian country with lots to offer. From Bangkok it is easy to take a plane to Singapore, Malaysia and Vietnam and they are all fascinating places to visit. If you don’t want to fly then you can always jump on the train. You can take a train from Bangkok to many other Asian cities, travelling by train is very cheap and sleepers provide comfort and a good chance of meeting other travelers.

You will find plenty of hotels and guest houses in the cities of Asia at reasonable prices. In the main tourist destinations your alternatives ranges from a simple room with a fan to a luxurious suite at an international hotel chains. In less popular destinations your choice will be more limited but you should always be able to find clean and comfortable accommodation. If you are planning on taking a trip to Asia in the near future then take a look online for hotels in Thailand and Bangkok as well as cheap Singapore hotels.

When Bangkok became the Kingdom’s Capital in 1782 (which marks the beginning of the Rattanakosin era), canals crosscut and converged at various points across the city. Thus, the main reason why early Western merchants and diplomats dubbed Bangkok the “Venice of the East.”

Early Bangkok residents lived life by the banks of the Chao Phraya River or close to it as Chao Phrya literally means ‘Great King.’ Today, many foreigners opt to stay in apartments and hotels along the river, because of its calming force and interesting views. Touring the waterways will give you a glimpse of the city’s glorious past, especially if you take a peak at the Royal Barge Museum – where you can imagine how wonderful a royal entourage of more than 70 barges down the river would look like.

While Bangkok may be fast-flying towards technological development, the genuine charm of the waterways seem to provide an unruffled source of temperance. Perhaps the nature of the river is best reflected by the famous Thai smile and hospitable disposition.

Many boat services along the Chao Phrya connect various ports in Bangkok with northern provinces as well. River cruises are ample, with some of the best offering sumptuous lunches – look out for some of the more traditional barges such as those operated by the Peninsula and Shangri-La. Canal tours are also widely available around the busy pier of Ta Chang.

Once you’re in a long-tail boat (kind of like a Thai style racing boat for passengers that is popular for touring) or a classic, gracefully moving barge, you will witness magnificent temples and other historic buildings of interest. You will see the Royal Thai Navy Dockyard, the Thai Maritime Navigation Company, the Old Customs House, Wat Prayunrawong temple, Wat Arun (Temple of Dawn), the Grand Palace, Wat Rakhang Kositaram, and the Royal Boat House.

If you have got more time, a visit to the river island of Koh Kret is also a good choice. A shuttle boat leaves Wat Sanam Nua temple, which is a brisk walk from the Pak Kret Pier and runs from 6 am to 9 pm. Basically, within the island, a community of traditional potters lives and peddle their wares for over a century. Descendants of Mon ancestry, their forefathers who arrived in Bangkok from Burma. Spending their lives perfecting the art of terracotta ceramics, tourists are very welcome to purchase their products.

However, try to stay off the river during the evening rush hour as the waterways remain a popular method of travel for much of the city’s population, a clever way to avoid the infamous Bangkok traffic.
